Name
Safety & Community Lightning Talks | PhilMod: Towards a Philosophy of Content Moderation
Description

This talk introduces PhilMod, an online speaker series and discussion group targeted at T&S professionals and academic philosophers. Our guiding principle is that these two groups of people reflect upon very similar questions through their work and can benefit from engaging in discussion with one another. Although philosophy is often seen as an esoteric and elitist discipline, T&S professionals frequently use its tools when they define concepts such as synthetic media, fake news, misinformation, conspiracy theories, deepfakes, free speech or harm. They also engage in philosophical thinking when they identify ethical principles which can guide and unify moderation policies. Unfortunately, professional philosophers and T&S professionals still lack an easily accessible open space for joint reflection. In a nutshell, PhilMod aims to be that space by offering T&S professionals the opportunity to meet new thought partners, break isolation and discover cutting-edge philosophical research on content moderation.

Lightning talks are 5-7 minute talks grouped with other 5-7 minute talks across a 50 minute session. There will be time for Q&A after all of the lightning talks in a session.
