Étienne Brown is Assistant professor of philosophy at San José State University, where he teaches technology ethics to the aspiring computer scientists of Silicon Valley. His research focuses on the ethics and political philosophy of online speech, with a current focus on the relationship between freedom, equality, content moderation and recommender systems. He is the founder and co-organizer of PhilMod.org, an online community devoted to the philosophical implications of content moderation. Étienne also advises Quebec government officials as a member of the Working Group on the Societal Impact of AI (Democracy, Environment, Arts and Culture) and has worked for the County of Santa Clara as a consultant for the Hate Prevention and Inclusion task force. He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the Sorbonne and was previously a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Oxford.
