Name
#BlackModsMatter: Key Findings from a Study of Reddit's Black Protectors
Description

This talk is part of the TrustCon 2024 Building Effective Teams Lightning Talk session. Lightning talk sessions are 50 minutes long, featuring a series of short 5-7 minute talks back-to-back in the same room, followed by Q&A at the end.

Recruiting new moderators on Reddit, where moderators are unpaid volunteers, has become more challenging than ever. Reddit explicitly banned hate speech nearly four years ago in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and while hate speech on the site is decreasing, Reddit's Black moderators are still experiencing challenges recruiting and retaining moderators. In this lightning talk I'll briefly go over the findings of my #BlackModsMatter study.

My goal is for attendees to better understand the motivations and attitudes of Black volunteer content moderators.
