Name
Local Nuance: From Moderation to Action
Description

This talk is part of a two-presentation session running from 4:10 PM - 5:00 PM. The session will feature two presentations back-to-back, with Q&A after each presentation.

A Trust & Safety discourse that does not incorporate the unique perspectives of its global user base risks missing or ignoring the diverse ethics, politics, and experiences of those using these technologies. This causes these perspectives to be absent from policy and product design, and reinforces existing hierarchies. An overlooked source of local insights is the global workforce performing content moderation at scale for large tech platforms. Hired in strategic geographies to provide contextually accurate enforcement, this workforce is often excluded in policy-making and logic of platforms. This presentation combines expertise from members of two Trust & Safety Foundation (TSF) Research Coalition committees (Psychological Health and Global Majority) on engaging, measuring, and actioning local nuance from on-the-ground moderators. It will outline the benefits of metric governance, such as a reviewer satisfaction score, and suggest creative approaches, including deploying a global research program, to ensure this insight source is adequately utilized.
