Name
Platform Accountability for Elections in the Majority World
Description

The most widely used online communication platforms in the Majority World are mostly owned by American tech companies. These companies typically “scale” globally by simply launching the same features designed for American or Western world users to the “rest of the world,” neglecting the unique needs and risks of users in different countries and cultures.  In a year where billions of users will use these platforms to discuss and engage with elections worldwide, how might we, as a trust and safety community, ensure platforms protect underserved people and global information ecosystems?  In this panel, technology and digital rights experts from around the world will share:

  • Principles for "scaling" responsibly and globally.
  • Best practices for understanding and designing for the unique needs of Global Majority communities.
  • Actionable tactics to mitigate the risks that will arise in Global Majority countries during elections.
