Nearly everyone supports children’s online safety regulation. Despite bipartisan agreement in the United States, legislation is stalled in Congress and state laws are being struck down in the courts. The kids online safety debate has gone around in circles for nearly three decades in the U.S. New momentum has resulted in proposals to set a baseline for reasonable safety design measures that protect the most vulnerable teens, hold platforms accountable and empower all to have a positive online experience. Youth safety policy experts will discuss efforts to find consensus on legislation that actually keeps kids safe while protecting everyone’s privacy and free expression rights. The panel will focus on implementing safety by design principles in U.S. public policy.
