Scaling Trust & Safety in the Fediverse: Insights From the IFTAS Needs Assessment
Description

This talk is part of a two-presentation session running from 11:10 AM - 12:00 PM. The session will feature two presentations back-to-back, with Q&A after each presentation.

Did you know the Fediverse has one moderator for every 2,500 accounts?  IFTAS is a nonprofit on a mission to scale Trust & Safety in the open social web. In 2023 we conducted a broad needs assessment of Mastodon, Pixelfed, Lemmy and other federated platform moderation teams spanning 134 respondents from 26 countries, collectively representing 12% of the Fediverse userbase.  Join us to explore the survey's findings, illuminating critical problems such as CSAM, hate speech, and regulatory compliance; and the logistical challenges to servicing these needs in a decentralised ecosystem.  We will review the current state of T&S in the Fediverse, and showcase innovative approaches to serve the predominantly volunteer moderation community in a complex, fragmented environment.  Delve into our comprehensive findings and join the conversation on advancing Trust & Safety practices in the ever-evolving landscape of the Fediverse.
