Among all the tech we use, dating apps have special importance for queer and other marginalized communities to meet, find community, hook up, and fall in love–some of our most intimate and fragile interactions with technology. However, being open to love and connection too often means exposing yourself to the possibility of threats and violence, from race-based discrimination to law enforcement. In jurisdictions where queerness is persecuted, even having an app on your phone can be used as evidence of a crime. The multidisciplinary panelists will discuss practical, proven measures to increase safety and equity, within and beyond dating apps. They will provide an overview of the Design from the Margins (DFM) methodology, which centers users who are both marginalized and criminalized, and use case studies to explain why placing their experiences and needs at the core of tech design and production ultimately benefits everyone in the product’s user base.
