Name
Translating Policy Into Product: Lessons Learned in Violation Taxonomies
Description

This talk is part of the TrustCon 2024 Policy & Product Lightning Talk session. Lightning talk sessions are 50 minutes long, featuring a series of short 5-7 minute talks back-to-back in the same room, followed by Q&A at the end.

Violation taxonomies are foundational instruments needed to effectively translate policy into product, essential for defining how your Trust and Safety system will operate across its automated and manual components, as well as for measuring the outcomes of that system. Whether for internal analytics, user communications, or public transparency reporting, building and maintaining a simple, consistent and complete taxonomy is critical in enabling your T&S function to programmatically answer "why" an action was taken on your platform. This lightning talk will discuss practical lessons learned from personal experience working on violation taxonomies from start-up to scale, including reflections on implementing a revised violation taxonomy at OpenSea and challenges in managing violation taxonomies within the context of transparency reports at Meta. Additionally, it will provide attendees with next steps to take to kickstart an audit of their own taxonomy.
