Name
The UK’s Safety Tech Challenge Fund 2: Tackling Link Sharing of Child Sexual Abuse Material
Description

The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), Home Office and GCHQ’s Safety Tech Challenge Fund 2 is investing up to £700,000 in innovation projects that enhance UK capabilities in protecting children online. Successful competition bidders are being awarded funding to develop innovative technologies to help in identifying and disrupting the sharing of child sexual abuse links to further develop a 'safety by design' culture in advance of upcoming regulatory changes. Links may be standard, shortened or obfuscated, and be being shared in either encrypted or non-encrypted environments. Grant funding is set to be awarded in late-May 2023, with successful projects running from June 2023 to February 2024. This lightning talk will explain the reasoning behind tackling this particular challenge and highlight the successful bidders and their chosen approaches. It will also contextualise this against the backdrop of wider efforts to promote online safety in the UK, including through the passing of the forthcoming Online Safety Bill and government investment into wider sector support initiatives.
