Name
History of Hate and Terrorism Online
Description

Violent extremism may not be a feature of the Internet, but it has been a persistent element since the early 1980s. This session will explore the history and evolution of hate and terrorism online, including the extremist strategists that drove adoption of these tools. The advent of social media and the rise the Islamic State attracted new attention to extremism online, but that focus has created the impression (among some) that this behavior is new. It is not. In fact, the persistence of extremism on the Internet is one of its defining features -- and so is the longstanding cat and mouse game between extremists and Trust & Safety efforts.
