This session intends to raise awareness about content moderation in decentralized online environments. Chen will share examples of hate speech moderation within the global, decentralized, and interconnected network of servers (aka "instances") known as the Federated Universe, the Fediverse. Chen will first present hate speech content shared and distributed by bad actors that migrated to the Fediverse after seeking alternatives to mainstream social media platforms. These bad actors, which consider the Fediverse an unmoderated environment, are active on multiple social networks and video-sharing and messaging services, creating an entire ecosystem of abuse. Chen will then show how publicly available "blocklists" have also become a possible method for moderation in a decentralized environment.
