We present a case study of how to build and mobilize an Indian student community to develop trust and safety tools for journalists from The Sunday Times, recently winning a Google Research Innovator award and a Wikimedia Foundation grant. We describe the obstacles and roadmap to achieving a successful mobilization after training students from underserved communities through a Google-funded machine learning summer course to precipitate their interests in trust and safety and civic integrity towards serving public good by building https://parrot.report that identified novel coordinated inauthentic behavior relating to pro-Russian disinformation and median narratives around the Ukrainian invasion and ultimately received awards from various organizations including WSDM a leading global research conference. It highlights an example of how the trust and safety community can tap into student expertise to build public tools to identify influence operations online.
